MAGENTA TICKSEED
Coreopsis rosea 'Sweet Dreams'
Coreopsis rosea 'Sweet Dreams' blends a medley of raspberry-pink centres and cream edged petals on each sweet daisy. This little bushy perennial covers itself with daisy blooms for months on end over summer and autumn.
So it is hard to fit a pin between the flowers.
A machine for flower production
The plant is naturally neat and compact, and it turns into a mound of sweetly blending colour all over the warm months.
Because as the days become hotter, the blooms flush increasingly deeper raspberry-pink.
So you get a medley of differently shaded blooms all the time.
Even better for a haircut
The only difficulty is deciding when you can bear to cut off all those flowers and give ‘Sweet Dreams a haircut.
But not to worry - it will be back in massed bloom very quickly, and all the better for the trim.
Coreopsis rosea 'Sweet Dreams' also has the advantage of "self-cleaning" flowers (they drop off when they finish). But it still pays to trim occasionally to keep it in tip-top production.
Water-wise & drought resistant
Coreopsis rosea ‘Sweet Dreams’ thrives in heat and is drought tolerant once established.
So it is ideal for water-wise gardeners.
GROWING: Coreopsis rosea 'Sweet Dreams'
Height with flowers: A powerhouse of flowers to 45cm. approx.
Width: Coreopsis rosea ‘Sweet Dreams’ makes a round, pudding shape slightly wider than it is high, so spreading to a diameter of approx. 60cm.
Position: Sun. Coreopsis like to bask in the sun and feel the breeze through their massed flowers. Though they can tolerate a little shade, providing they are well aired.
Very suitable for seaside gardens and hot, dry districts.
Treat them lean & mean for best results
Soil: Coreopsis are not fussy about soil type, but they do insist on good drainage.
So, they will thrive in poorer soils with low fertility; and they particularly enjoy sandy, rocky, or gravel soils, to average garden loam. However, they will rot in heavy soil.
Coreopsis rosea ‘Sweet Dreams’ can also tolerate a wide range of soil pH, on either the acid or alkaline (lime) side of neutral and tolerates limestone soils well.
Water-wise: Coreopsis rosea ‘Sweet Dreams’ is a water-wise plant.
So normal, average garden watering is more than enough for it to thrive and perform brilliantly.
It revels in heat and can easily withstand periods of dry between drinks, as well as tolerating summer humidity.
‘Sweet Dreams’ is a drought resistant plant.
Care: Cut back by 1/3 in mid-summer to promote even more profuse flowering (or whenever you can harden your heart enough to cut off all those flowers).
But fear not - the haircut will quickly promote even more flowers and extend the flowering season even longer. Plus prevent it from flowering itself to death!
A little fertilizer with the haircut will keep its flowering spirits up, but do not over fertilize.
They are better grown lean, and then they flower even more profusely.
Frost: Can tolerate light frost down to approx. -5C, but will require some overhead shelter, perhaps from a nearby taller shrub or wall, in areas with severe frosts.
Growth: An evergreen, perennial mound which will slowly spread by rhizomes to form a flower laden groundcover.
Beneficial for wildlife
Pollinator friendly: Bees gather both nectar and pollen from the prolific star flowers and butterflies gain energy with all the nectar.
There are so many flowers, for so long, our pollinating friends regard a Coreopsis plant as one big smorgasbord.
Deer & Rabbit resistant: Though Coreopsis are not completely immune to our grazing foes, they do not appear to place them high on their menu.
Origin: Coreopsis rosea ‘Sweet Dreams’ is recently bred and is a sterile hybrid. So it does not produce any seed.
However, it derives from original wild plants that are native to hot and dry regions of Mexico and the west of U.S.A. Which of course accounts for its well-deserved reputation for hardiness in heat, drought, and poor soils.
