Kale is a wonderful leafy crop for winter and spring harvests and grows particularly well through the colder months.
Winter is also a time when the pesky Cabbage White Butterflies are absent. So, you can admire completely hole-less leaves.
Kale is not at all fussy about type of soil. So, it can be successfully grown in a wide soil range - from sandy, to garden loam, or enriched clay. Though all soil should be enriched with organic matter and well drained.
Kale can also tolerate a soil pH on either the acid or alkaline side of neutral.
Though it does appreciate a dressing of dolomite lime when you are preparing the bed to sweeten it before planting.
And like most leafy greens it thrives on fertilizer.
So we recommend regular applications through the growing season of quality fertilizer such as Powerfeed and Seasol.
We also recommend watering in with Seasol at planting time.
Mulch is recommended to help maintain an even moisture content in the soil.
Harvest often and choose fresh young leaves for tender and tasty eating.
The flavour is sweetest in the colder months.
Kale is hardy in moderate frosts.
