CHAIN OF HEARTS
Ceropegia woodii
Ceropegia woodii, commonly called “Chain of Hearts” makes one of the loveliest indoor hanging plants.
Ceropegia woodii forms long, dangling chains of heart-shaped leaves, deep emerald-green spangled with silver, pink and cream patterns, while the back of each leaf is also rich purple.
Plus the long stems are also deep purple and can trail down 3-4m. long unless trimmed.
Hence the common name of Chain of Hearts.
Slender and dainty, Chain of Hearts is spectacular trailing down from a pot on a high shelf or hanging basket indoors.
Or from the roof of a sheltered porch where it receives good light but no direct sunlight.
Chain of Hearts also blooms in late summer and autumn.
With pale mauve flowers looking like rosary beads – giving it an alternative common name of “Rosary Vine”.
It is a fast grower, but always fine and dainty and remains evergreen throughout the year.
Ceropegia woodii is actually an evergreen succulent – so it prefers to live on the dry side, and to almost dry out between each deep watering through spring, summer and autumn.
While it is best left to almost completely dry out during winter with only infrequent watering.
So do not overwater this dainty charmer but do wash or dust the lovely heart-shaped leaves from time to time to keep them at the lace patterned best.
Ceropegia woodii enjoys a well-lit indoor position, but with no direct sunlight hitting it, and to have a weak drench of liquid fertilizer from time to time during summer, ready for flowering.
Normal household temperatures of between 15-30C are exactly to it’s liking, and it is not toxic to pets or humans.
So it is an ideal house companion.
If leaves begin to yellow – it usually means the plant has been over-watered.
While pale leaves usually indicate it needs a position with a little more light.
If leaves begin to look shrunken and wrinkled – it usually means it needs a drink.
Other common names for this universally loved houseplant include: Sweetheart Vine, String of Hearts, and Hearts on a String. All describe it perfectly.
