Salvia Mexicana ‘Lime Calyx’ is a colour stunner.
With rich purple-blue flowers, clasped in vivid lime-green calyx (the bit that attaches the flower to the stem).
And these are big showy, long heads of blue and lime. WOW.
Blooms for a long period from late summer right through autumn – much to the pleasure of our native honey-eating birds and bees.
Plant in either part shade or full sun.
This is one plant that really thrives in company with a taller tree or shrub - making it very useful in tricky parts of the garden where there may be bigger plants, drier conditions and full sun is not available all day.
Helpfully it does not mind a little dry, and is also tolerant of heat and summer humidity.
However, it also really appreciates that companion shrub or overhead shelter from hard winter frosts.
90-150cm. High (depending on conditions – it may be even taller where more water or richer soil is available).
So salvia Mexicana ‘Lime Calyx’ is one plant that is better kept a little hungry and thirsty – (it keeps it more compact).
Usually an evergreen rounded shrub (though it may be cut back by hard frosts – (so cut back hard at the end of winter to start fresh spring growth).
